Garage Door Cost: What Drives Price for Buyers and Projects

Garage Door Cost: What Drives Price for Buyers and Projects

Table des matières

A garage door cost quote can double without the door changing. That is not a rounding error or a sales trick. Three different products get sold under one name: le panneau de porte, the hardware that lifts it, and the labor that makes the opening work. Until a quote separates those three, no two numbers are comparable.

The US benchmark sits well above most door-only price lists. Zonda’s 2025 Coût par rapport. Value Report puts the average US garage door replacement job at $4,672 installé. The same report values that job at $12,507 at resale, a recoup of 267.7 pour cent.

This guide breaks the number into the six levers that set it, then adds the importer’s view. A container of doors lands at a very different figure than the FOB quote suggests.

Garage Door Cost Ranges At A Glance

Read the scope and the currency before you read the number. A door price and an installed price are two different products.

Every band below is a planning range compiled from manufacturer and installer price guides in the named market. None of it is a quote from our factory.

The scope problem is not trivia. B&D publishes its Australian bands as door prices and states that installation is excluded. UK installers sell the opposite way. TWF Roller Garage Doors lists roller doors from £949 fitted and sectional doors from £1,049, with professional fitting included in its two home counties. Two buyers comparing a £949 quote against an A$2,000 quote are comparing a finished opening to a crate.

Market and Configuration Published Range Scope of That Figure
US sectional, non-insulated single À propos $700 à $1,500 Door only
US sectional, insulated double À propos $1,200 à $2,800 Door only
US replacement job with opener $4,672 US average Installed, opener and labor included
US custom wood-look or full-view glass À propos $3,000 à $6,000 Door only
Australia single roller A$2,000 to A$3,500 Door only, installation excluded
Australia double roller A$4,000 to A$6,500 Door only, installation excluded
UK roller, fitted From £949 Supply and installation included
UK sectional, fitted From £1,049 Supply and installation included
UK self-install kit From £620 Delivered, no fitting

Three Markets, Three Default Products

The bands differ by mechanism as much as by wage rate. The United States is a sectional market, reinforced by attached garages and ceiling-mounted rail openers. Australia runs the other way, where the single-skin roller is the volume default because it needs no ceiling depth. The UK splits between the sectional and the legacy up-and-over panel.

A distributor importing the wrong default pays twice, in freight and in the support cost of selling a door local trades have no habit of fitting.

What Actually Drives the Price

Conception personnalisée de porte de garage

Span, gauge, core, vitrage, automation, et du travail. Six levers, and only the first three are decided by the door itself.

Span comes first because it pulls everything else. Clopay’s sizing guidance puts residential singles between 8 et 10 ft wide and doubles between 12 et 18 pi. A wider curtain is heavier, and heavier needs a stronger spring tube, more cycles of tension, and longer tracks. Above a certain width the roller door stops being a scaled-up single and becomes an engineered item. B&D’s wind-strengthened rollers reach 5500 mm in one span, and that span is where the price step happens. Read a garage door cost sheet in that order and the numbers stop looking arbitrary.

Gauge and Profile Wall

Material thickness is the quietest cost line and the easiest one to lose on a quote sheet. Our published specs state it outright. Steel series run 40 mm panels on a 0.4 mm steel wall, and aluminum series use 1.2 à 2.5 mm profile wall. The hard roller shutter builds 2.0 mm slats at 80 mm height on 1.0 mm aluminum. Ask any supplier for those three numbers and a thin door prices itself honest.

Steel buys strength per dollar and takes a foam core well. Aluminum buys the same span at less weight and never rusts, which is why framed glass doors and export-grade panel doors sit on aluminum profiles. Notre portes de garage en acier ou en aluminium comparison runs that trade-off to the end.

Wear Parts Set the Real Cost

Panels outlive their hardware, so a door’s true cost is a maintenance schedule. B&D’s engineering notes rate torsion springs around 15,000 à 20,000 cycles and extension springs around 5,000 à 10,000. Whole-door cycle testing runs under the ANSI/DASMA framework. That is why the garage door components list matters more at tender stage than the finish sample does.

Our own mechanism testing is published at 100,000 cycles with a five-year warranty behind it. Read that as a floor for the hardware, not for the installation.

Cost by Door Type and Size

Garage Door Customization and After Sales Service Opuomen

Mechanism sets the floor price, then size, core, and options stack on top of it.

Type is the first branch in any garage door cost comparison. Roller doors are the cheapest way to close a wide opening when insulation is not the brief. The UK range shows the ladder plainly: £949 for a base 55 mm roller, £1,599 for a 77 mm model with full cladding and a wireless safety edge. Same opening, same mechanism, and the price moves 69 percent because the curtain and the safety package changed.

Sectional doors cost more in bare form and earn it back in the options list. Hinged panels on ceiling tracks accept insulation, vitrage, et quincaillerie décorative, and they take a rail opener cleanly. Tilt-up and side-hung doors carry the simplest hardware in the category, which is why they survive on short-apron UK properties.

Size is where buyers overpay by reflex. UN 9 x 7 ft opening does not need a door engineered for 16 pi. Before scaling up, notre standard garage door sizes guide sets out what each market builds to, and where a made-to-measure door is genuinely required.

The factory range covers sectional panel doors and roller shutters, quoted to your opening on the garage doors category page. Tilt-up and side-hung doors sit outside that catalogue, and we would rather say so than quote what we cannot build.

Insulation Upgrade and R-Value Premium

A foam core is the biggest single jump in a residential garage door cost, and the rating that sells it uses two different unit systems.

Insulation arrives as a core. Expanded polystyrene is the economy fill, injected polyurethane the denser upgrade, with reflective foil and polyester batts sitting between them. Across US configurators, the move from an unfoamed panel to a polyurethane-filled one adds roughly $200 à $400 to the door. It is the upgrade that changes a quote band rather than nudging it.

The value depends on what the garage touches. A detached storage building in a mild climate has no case for a foam core. A conditioned workshop, or a bedroom built over the garage, does.

Check Which R Scale a Datasheet Uses

This is the trap that costs importers margin. Clopay’s insulated residential lines are rated from R-6.5 to R-18.4 on the US IP scale. Australian datasheets quote SI R-values and reuse the same two letters. B&D’s own comparison puts the local figure at roughly one-fifth of the US number for the same door, which lands Australian insulated constructions between about R1.4 and R2.0. A sheet claiming R-14 describes a strong door in New Jersey and an impossible one in Newcastle.

Panel ratings also flatter the finished assembly, because joints, a bottom seal, and glazing test lower than the bare panel cut from it. Our published series specs give what the assembled door performs: 40 mm panels and airtightness of about 2.0 m³ per m² per hour at 50 Pennsylvanie. The same sheets publish a heat transfer value of 0.4 W per m² per K.

Possibilités, Vitrage, and Automation Costs

Options are where a garage door cost separates from a price list. Every one is a line item, never a rounding.

Windows and Decorative Hardware

Across US price guides, adding a window band or a decorative hinge and handle set to a sectional door moves the order by roughly $150 à $800 per option. Glazing carries two further decisions. Vision panels in a domestic door should be tempered, and every square metre of glass lowers the assembly rating the bare panel earned.

Decorative hardware is cosmetic and should be priced that way. A carriage house door sold across the US is a sectional door wearing hinge and handle furniture, fitted to look like an old swing-out barn door. If a quote charges structural money for that look, ask what changed in the mechanism.

Full-view doors are the real spend. An aluminum-framed glass curtain rides the same track system yet changes the material bill completely. That is why our perspective series publishes 2.5 mm aluminum profile wall with 5 mm tempered glass options. Finish choices then follow regional taste more than physics, from matte blacks in Australian work to woodgrain laminates on US spec sheets.

Openers and Smart Control

An opener is a second machine with its own life expectancy, so price it separately and the quote stops looking inflated.

US price guides put residential opener hardware between roughly $300 et $500 for a self-installed unit, et $400 à $800 once a technician fits it. The spread above that is feature-driven: belt versus chain drive, battery backup, Wi-Fi control, keypad access, and a photoelectric reversal beam.

Roller doors automate differently, because the drive is a tubular motor inside the head drum rather than a unit on the ceiling. That is why a powered roller never resembles a rail-opener install and why B&D asks for about 450 mm of headspace for the drum. Our series publish turbine lifting at 160 mm per second, with remote, keypad, photoelectric, and app control configured per project.

Buy cycles, not cleverness. Garador’s own guidance defines normal domestic use as no more than five operations a day and plans spring replacement around 25,000 operations. A door on a busy household schedule with a cheap spring is a service call with your name on it. Safety sits in the same box: manufacturers such as Genie put spring tension work outside the DIY envelope, and the correct answer is a qualified technician.

Installation Labor and Repair Costs

Labor is the part of a garage door cost you cannot import. Budget it before the door arrives.

Installed figures behave differently by market. UK installers fold fitting into the advertised price, Australian manufacturers publish it as an exclusion, and US remodel economics bundle door, matériel, and labor into one job. That last convention is why the Zonda figure of $4,672 reads so high beside a door-only band.

Repairs are where ownership cost becomes concrete. Published US service bands disagree with each other, and the disagreement is the honest answer.

Wear Part Published US Service Band Published Life Rating Warranty Treatment
Torsion spring set $150 à $350, ou $350 à $540 À propos 15,000 à 20,000 cycles Excluded as a wear item by B&D
Extension springs À propos $75 à $180 À propos 5,000 à 10,000 cycles Excluded as a wear item by B&D
Lift cables À propos $100 à $250 Inspected at service, not cycle-rated Excluded as a wear item by B&D

Now run the arithmetic over a decade. A household cycling the door four times a day spends 1,460 cycles a year. A 15,000-cycle torsion spring reaches the end of its rating in about ten years, and a 20,000-cycle spring in about fourteen. So plan one spring set, and one service visit, inside the first ten years of ownership.

Those exclusions are a signal about what a door warranty was ever meant to cover. B&D limits springs, scellés, and cables to twelve months and makes biennial service a condition of cover. Raynor rates its springs at three years and voids that cover when the maintenance schedule is skipped. Garador excludes repair work carried out by unqualified persons. Panels on a decent door last 15 à 30 années; the hardware between them is a budget line.

Landed Cost for Importer Orders

Meilleur conteneur pour les commandes de portes en vrac

FOB is a starting number. Duty, entry fees, freight, and shrinkage decide the cost you can actually sell from.

We ship FOB as standard, which puts the freight decision and the customs entry on the buyer’s side of the line. That is normal in cross-border door trade, and it means your garage door cost model is your own work. Here is the model in full.

Duty and Entry Fees

Classification moves the number before any policy does. On the published US tariff schedule, steel doors fall under HTS 7308.30.50 at Free, while aluminum doors and frames sit under 7610.10.00 at 5.7 pour cent. On a $60,000 entry that is $0 against $3,420, purely from what the door is made of.

Two federal fees then apply to almost every commercial entry. The merchandise processing fee runs at 0.3464 percent of entered value, with a published floor of $34.58 and a ceiling of $670.86 per entry, so a $60,000 entry pays $207.84. The harbor maintenance fee runs at 0.125 pour cent, and it applies to the ocean freight rather than the goods value, with no cap. On $4,000 of ocean freight that is $5.00.

Above those base rates sits the volatile part. Aluminum moved through Section 232 actions and a replacement Section 301 regime during 2026. Customs published final results in its 17 August 2026 notice on aluminum extrusions from China. Never price a container off last quarter’s duty line. Re-check the current HTS note and any trade-action column for your exact classification before you sign a customer.

Fret, Emballage, and Damage Reserve

Door kits are a cube problem, not a weight problem. Panels and profiles fill a container’s volume long before they reach its payload limit. The per-door freight figure is set by how tightly the packing plan stacks, not by tonnage on the manifest. Build the reserve line for damage at 1.5 à 2 percent of goods value. Steel edges ding, glass breaks, and a claim against a marine policy takes months you do not have.

Worksheet Line What Goes Into It Sur le $60,000 Exemple
Ex-works goods value FOB quote from the factory $60,000 assumed
Origin handling and inland freight Plant to port, export documentation Buyer-side under FOB
Ocean freight Per container, booked by the buyer $4,000 assumed
Duty HTS rate on entered value $0 steel or $3,420 aluminium
Merchandise processing fee 0.3464 percent of entered value $207.84
Harbor maintenance fee 0.125 percent of ocean freight $5.00
Insurance and damage reserve 1.5 à 2 percent of goods value $900 à $1,200
Final-mile delivery Port to warehouse or to site Quote per destination
Sellable unit cost Landed total divided by doors received Count from cube, not invoice

Pricing from that total is one step, not a guess. Divide the landed unit cost by one minus your target gross margin. A landed unit of $595.97 divided by 0.65 gives a sellable price of $916.88 at a 35 percent margin. Notre pocket door cost breakdown walks the same worksheet line by line on a different product family.

Before you send a single RFQ, write down what a complete quote must break out. Six lines, in this order:

  • Door build, with panel thickness, core, and the gauge or profile wall stated in numbers.
  • Mechanism and spring set, with the published cycle rating rather than a service-life adjective.
  • Glazing and hardware costed per option, so upgrades stay visible as line items.
  • Opener or tubular motor with its control package and safety equipment.
  • Landed cost lines with the HTS classification named on the sheet.
  • Warranty scope plus the service interval the warranty assumes.

Foire aux questions

How much does it cost to install a new garage door?

Aux États-Unis, budget against $4,672, the US job cost Zonda records for a complete garage door replacement, installé. Door-only prices sit far lower, between roughly $700 et $2,800, which is why two quotes in one town can look unrelated.

Is an insulated garage door worth the extra money?

Only where the garage touches conditioned space. The polyurethane upgrade adds roughly $200 à $400 to the door and is the line that moves a quote band. For a detached storage building in a mild climate, the unfoamed panel is the rational buy and the core money is better spent elsewhere.

How much does garage door spring replacement cost?

Published US service bands put a torsion spring set at $150 à $350 in one guide and $350 à $540 in another. Extension springs run about $75 à $180. Springs are excluded from most manufacturer warranties as wear items, so expect to pay this at least once in the first ten years.

Which type of garage door is the cheapest?

A single-skin roller door closes a wide opening for the least money, and UK installers publish fitted prices from £949. Tilt-up doors carry the simplest hardware of all. The cheapest purchase is rarely the cheapest decade, because insulation, spring rating, and the service schedule decide what you pay after installation.

What adds to the price when importing garage doors?

Classification first. Steel doors enter the US at Free under HTS 7308.30.50 while aluminum doors carry 5.7 percent under 7610.10.00. Then the merchandise processing fee at 0.3464 pour cent, harbor maintenance at 0.125 percent of ocean freight, marine insurance, and a damage reserve of 1.5 à 2 pour cent.
